Your intelligence brief on infrared thermography

Volume 6, Issue 12

In This Issue:

Welcome

Hello  {{user("firstname")}},

The weather is turning colder here in Massachusetts and we found a super interesting story about a jacket that lets you change its insulation ability. Of course thermography played a part in its development. I think you will find the story fascinating and exciting.

For those of you with FLIR Systems cameras, we have an important tech note about your batteries, please make sure you read it.

Jack Kleinfeld has brought us a fun new way to search for thermographers which literally allows you to put yourself on the map. Check it out in the Message post section in red.

As usual we have our Message board posts, News items, and our monthly Brainteaser for you to solve.

Thermography Confirms New Jacket Design

You’ve got to see this! A jacket that can change its insulation level WHILE you are wearing it WITHOUT removing or changing any pieces; and thermography proves it works....

Important Note about Battery Charging

This note applies to all ThermaCAM P/S and E/B Series FLIR Systems Thermography Cameras that use lithium ion batteries.

The users’ manual instructs the user to fully discharge and charge a new battery a couple of times by using the camera until the battery is fully depleted. This leads some users to discharge the battery beyond the point when the Low battery text is displayed.

If the battery goes beyond the Low battery point, camera operation and/or battery function may be affected.

Please remove the battery from the camera for recharging as soon as the Low battery text is displayed.

 ITC Message Board Posts

Here is a selection of recent new threads by IR Community members. Feel free to click the links, see how people have responded, and post your own response if you like.

  • Insurance
I am currently working for a GC and want to go on my own. I have work lined up, but need liability insurance first. The problem is no one want to provide coverage, so I need some help in finding and agent. If anyone has some info I would really appreciate it.

  • Show us where you are!
I have created an IR Thermographers map on Frapper.com. This is a new service using Google Maps. It's pretty cool. Members (free) get a flag on the map to show where they are. You can also "shout out" to your colleagues. Here is the link - Jack Kleinfeld

  • Emissivity Tables
Does any one have Emissivity Tables for Insulators & powerline hardware. Am about to do some IR powerline fault detection & was after the emissivity values to use. My Power Grid operator can not supply this info.

  • IR Needs Survey
Does anyone have an IR Thermography Needs Survey/Assessment Form suitable for a range of industries or plants they would be willing to pass on? This is to survey in a uniform way what needs plants or industries might have for the deployment of IR surveillance or monitoring.

  • MOV Arrestor failure
Looking for anyone with experience scanning MOV arrestors (in spetial 245 KV). I would like to know how a failure is determined in this kind of arrestor. Is it a hot spot or is it like a heat distribution through the whole block?

  • Finding abandoned underground storage tanks
I have seen reference to finding abandoned USTs using infrared, but I have not been able to find any articles on the subject. Anyone have any experience or know where I could find anything on conducting environmental surveys and finding buried tanks?

  • IR sensor
Can anybody tell me why IR cameras used for night vision or general purpose surveillance can not be used for thermography ie spatial temperature measurement

  • Emissivity when taking images at an angle
I have an application where I will be taking images of a printed circuit assembly that is installed inside an instrument. Due to how the board is installed, the camera will have to be at an angle to the board. How will that impact the emissivity values and thus the temperature reading? At what angle can I assume emissivity values haven't changed?

  • How can I deal with the water on the surface of lens?
I have to catch IR photos of a machine which give off lots of vapor.
How can I deal with the water on the surface of lens?
I thought to use a glass cloth or a hair dryer, but afraid of destroying the lens.

And of course if YOU have a question or want to start a discussion on a topic, we would love to hear from you. Just post a new thread on a message board.

Brainteaser of the Month

Here is this month's brainteaser. Readers who email us the correct identification and explanation of the thermal pattern in the thermogram are entered into a drawing to win a prize from ITC.

Please put "Brainteaser" as the subject of the message.

Click here to email your guess

Do you have an interesting image that you think would challenge other thermographers? If so please email me your image (preferably in native .img, .jpg, .tif, .tgw, or .tmw format) with an accompanying visible photo and explanation. If your image is used, you receive a gift as well.

Last Month's Brainteaser

November's Brainteaser is an IR image and photo of 30# condensate running to and swirling around a manhole cover. Kind of looks a little like a small hurricane contributed by Roy Gariepy from Dorlastan LLC in SC. I didn't think anyone would guess this but I was wrong, we had several correct guesses and our winner is Scott Wunderlich from Link Support Services LLC in Minnesota.

Congratulations to our winner, Scott and to Roy. They both receive low emissivity traveling coffee mugs.
