Hello {{user("firstname")}},

Its September and that means back to school for students the world over, and thermographers are no exception.

You have a multitude of learning choices available to you including instructor led courses in the classroom and over the web,
E-Learning web based courses, this newsletter, and of course the InfraMation Conference.

With high energy costs and winter looming ahead, we are all thinking about how we can reduce our energy bills. In this month's article, Roy Chan provides several examples of how thermography can help.

As usual we have our Message board posts, News items, and our monthly Brainteaser for you to solve.

As with all images in this newsletter, click an image to see a larger version.

We'll see you next month,

Using Infrared Thermography as an Added Diagnostic Tool
in Building Inspections

by Roy Chan
Consumers Choice Property Consultants Inc.

When performing most common building inspections, the methodology used is mainly visual assessment. When there are no obvious signs or symptoms appearing it is difficult to determine one way or another. This may become a confidence issue for the inspector or result in loss of business. The client(s) may want to have a definitive answer and may turn to destructive testing – a costly expedition. If this is the scenario, here is the answer – Infrared thermography. The nice thing about infrared thermography is that you do not have to perform destructive testing to pin point the problem and its location.

INTRODUCTION
Infrared thermography can be performed on most buildings with the following concerns: insulation, air leakage, and moisture, electrical, heating and cooling problems. Moreover, there are other similar applications such as construction defects, and qualify or quantify if there are materials added as specified and so on. All these applications can be carried out relatively easily without performing destructive testing...

 ITC Message Board Posts

Here is a selection of recent new threads by IR Community members. Feel free to click the links, see the responses, and post your own response if you like.

  • Electric Wiring in commercial Building
I was performing a thermal clearance for a restoration company. They had dehumidifier and air movers in this one office. After shutting the machinery down and removing them. I came in to perform thermal imaging to make sure the structure was dry. On one of the walls my EX320 picked up this anomaly in the wall. It ran from the outlet to the adjacent wall. The IR Image is just a section of the anomaly. I have not seen this before. Is this a normal occurrence or is there something wrong with the wiring?

  • Can you see it ? What is it ?
Check out this Image. Very odd.

  • Insurance
I am trying to get reasonable insurance for myself and my EX320. I am looking for E&O insurance for myself. I just received a quote of $2,700.00 just for my liability alone. The Carrier does not handle contents which means my camera. Does anyone have a good agent out there.

  • Silencer of Air Compressor
Has anyone ever seen thermal pattern of silencer like this? I'm not sure that the inside structure is damage which cause of air compresor surge.
Basic information : Elliott 3 stages
    Flow 7000 Nm3/hr
    Pressure 7 Bar
Please give me any comments. Thank you

  • Air Conditioning Inspection Using IR
Guys, Here is a good example on how IR can help you guys out there in inspecting Air conditioning split unit. From the picture, you can see a black area on the condenser coil. Which in reality shows that there is a potential blockage in the coil. However do remember due to many type/design of coil, some manufacturer is actually not using all the coil lines. So after flushing the condenser coil with R11 solvent, all the black spot/area are no longer there.

  • WDI Detection (Termites)
I am a new member and would like to know if anyone has any information on how to locate termite activity in walls. I have a BCAM, is this camera OK? If not what camera type is better. Thanks for any help you can offer.

And of course if YOU have a question or want to start a discussion on a topic, we would love to hear from you. Just post a new thread on a message board.

Brainteaser of the Month

Here is this month's brainteaser. Readers who email us a correct explanation are entered into a drawing to win a prize. Please put "Brainteaser" as the subject of the message.

Click here to email your guess

Do you have an interesting image that you think would challenge other thermographers? If so please email me your image (preferably in native .img, .jpg, .tif, .tgw, or .tmw format) with an accompanying visible photo and explanation. If your image is used, you receive a gift as well.

Last Month's Brainteaser

Last month's brainteaser is a thermal image of a flat black rubber roof with pools of rain water. The bright spot is the top of an exhaust pipe coming up on the outside wall from a diesel powered sprinkler system running during a weekly test.

Only 1 guess out of the 109 we received was correct. Congratulations to our winner Jerry Schreier and to our thermogram contributor, Dave Wichhart from the Pella Corporation. They win the revered ITC low e coffee mug.
